12 Useful Google Chrome Extensions for 2012

I love Google Chrome. Its just a few years old, but it has become the browser of choice for most web designers and developers. Chrome’s browsing speed and the huge list of free ad-ons and extensions available make it hard to beat. Today’s collection focuses on Free Extensions powered and offered by Google Chrome, which are highly helpful for a designer/developer. Please have a look and leave a comment if you know any other useful extension I am missing here.

01 – Incredible StartPage

A new, customizable start page for Chrome. Easily find your favorite bookmarks and closed tabs. Take notes as you browse.

If you have tested it and it’s not your cup of tea, just go to “chrome://extensions/” to uninstall; This is the standard way to uninstall start page or script extensions of all kinds.

Incredible StartPage is a productive start page replacement for Chrome. Put all your favorite bookmarks in a beautiful frame, and enjoy there handy features! They are a featured extension by Google!

02 – Evernote Web Clipper

Use the Evernote extension to save things you see on the web into your Evernote account. It even lets you search through your notes.

Evernote Web Clipper is the best way to remember all of the great stuff you see online. Forget about bookmarks and open tabs, save the actual web page – text, links, images and all with a single click.

03 – Send from Gmail

Clicking ‘mail to’ links online can be annoying if you’re a Gmail user, because they generally launch the default mail program and don’t work well if you prefer to use web mail. Send from Gmail changes that behaviour to open a Gmail ‘Compose mail’ window in Chrome whenever you click an email link.

It also gives you a Gmail button next to the address bar, which you can click to open a new mail message wherever you are. You can configure the extension to support Google App for your domain.

04 – Dropbox

Dropbox is a free service that lets you store up to 2GB of data on a remote server. It synchronises your stored files with local copies on as many PCs as you like.

Dropbox lets you access your Dropbox files directly in Chrome, so you can quickly download or upload a modified file without installing Dropbox locally. This is ideal for portable computing and laptops, where you don’t want to sync continually.

Once you’ve installed the Dropbox extension, you’ll be prompted to enter your username and password. You can also specify the size of the popup window used to display your files.

The security of your data on Dropbox was given the highest priority while building this extension. As such, the extension establishes a direct HTTPS connection with Dropbox, does not run through any hidden proxies, and is the equivalent (in terms of security) of browsing your documents on dropbox.com itself.

05 – PageRank Status

Shows Google PageRank and AlexaRank of current web page, quick access to Geo IP Location, Whois, Alexa, backlinks and indexed pages.

06 – Handy Google Shortcuts

Very simple chrome extension (handy solution) for all useful Google Products/Services. Currently this extension has total 48 Google shortcuts

– Adjust RGB color values of any custom color (e.g 255,255,255)
– Adjust the Hue, Saturation, and Brightness
– Preview colors by inputing the values of that color

PLEASE NOTE: This does not get the color from a page or picture by clicking on it. This extension merely allows you to generate a color to use with your project. It accomplishes essentially the same thing that http://www.colorpicker.com does.

Color Generator is a full featured color generator/editor which will make your life as a designer easier. It’s easy to use and loads fast, so it’s always there when you need it!
